I STARTED OUT WITH A STOCK 3200 YERF DOG. THE FIRST FEW TRAIL RUNS I KNEW THE STOCK ENGINE AND GEARING WERE DOOMED. I TOYED WITH THE IDEA OF SELLING THE CART AND BUILDING A SERIOUS OFF ROAD CART FROM THE FRAME UP. MY LACK OF WELDING EXPERIENCE HELD ME BACK ON THAT IDEA. I THOUGHT THE FRAME OF THE 3200 WAS DECENT BUT ALMOST EVERYTHING ELSE ON THE CART WAS MADE UP OF THE CHEAPEST COMPONETS AVAILABLE. COMPARED TO THE ROAD BOSS CART, WE BOUGHT FOR MY SON THE YERF SEEMED POORLY ENGINEERED. SO I STARTED SURFING THE WEB AND DRAWING PLANS. THEN I BEGAN TO CHANGE EVERYTHING THAT I COULD REMOVE AND REPLACE WITH A WRENCH. THE RESULT WAS THE EVOLVING CONCEPT OF THE YERF ROCKET HELL HOUND
I DREW UP PLANS FOR NEW JACKSHAFT, ENGINE, REAR BRAKES, AXLE, FRONT AND REAR HUBS AND TIRES. THIS WENT THROUGH MANY EVOLUTIONS BEFORE THIS DESIGN WON OUT. A LOT OF THIS PARTICULAR DESIGN WAS DICTATED BY QUIRKS OF THE YERF FRAME ITSELF AND THE FACT THAT I WANTED TO AVOID WELDING OR DRILLING THE FRAME IF POSSIBLE

POWER PLANT AND DRIVE
The choice of an engine is critical. It is the heart of the beast. My first engine was a Star 10 by Dave Ables of Whitney Carts (aka Batman).
This engine was a real rocket and it was a bred racer. I was generally satisfied with the engine with some noteable exceptions. My second choice was based more on convience and reliability than raw power. I wanted torque, power, electric start, charging system to run lights and a sound system and the kind of reliability you would want to depend on miles from the nearest road. The Star did not fit that bill so I went in search of a powerplant that would meet my needs

CHANGING THE POWERPLANT OPENED A WORLD OF NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR THE HELL HOUND. WITH A BATTERY AND A CHARGING SYSTEM YOU CAN RUN OFF ROAD LIGHTS, A WINCH AND A RADIO OR SOUND SYSTEM. ALSO ELECTRIC START SOLVES THE PROBLEMS MENTIONED IN THE SECTION IN THE STAR 10 POWERED SECTIONS.

THE 44 MAGNUM T/C IS A CONTINUOUSLY VARIBLE POWER TRANSMISSION SYSTEM DESIGNED TO HANDLE THE HELL HOUND'S POWER. NO SHIFTING JUST PUSH THE GAS AND GO.
THE SELECTION OF COMPONET PARTS IS VERY IMPORTANT. THE USE OF CHEAP PARTS IS WHAT DOOMED THE OEM YERF DOG TO BEING A YARD CART. YOU NEED A POWERFUL ENGINE TO HAVE A FUN RESPONSIVE CART ON HILLS AND IN THE MUD. YOU NEED DECENT TIRES TO STEER AND TO GET THE POWER TO TRAIL. QUALITY BEARINGS MUST BE USED TO INSURE LONG LIFE AND RELIABILTY.
AS OLD JOHN SAYS; "IT IS HARD TO SPEND TOO MUCH ON PARTS. ON THE OTHER HAND IT IS EASY TO SPEND TOO LITTLE. IF YOU SPEND TOO LITTLE THE PART YOU GET WILL PROBABLY BE A PART THAT WILL WEAR OUT FAST OR WORSE YET NOT EVEN DO THE JOB. HOWEVER, IF YOU SPEND TO MUCH AT LEAST THE PARTS YOU GET WILL  BE QUALITY MADE AND WILL LAST. THEY ALSO WILL OUT PERFORM JUNK PARTS THREE TO ONE.  SO IN THE END IT IS OFTEN CHEAPER TO SPEND TOO MUCH."  OLD JOHN
